Feb 7th was Homeschool Capitol Day, and we spent the day at the Capitol and the History Museum. We were joined with 2000 other homeschool parents and students, as we came to let our legislatures know what we do and don't want to see in the laws pertaining to homeschool. There were many activities; a scavenger hunt in the capitol, a prayer walk, historical renactments, tours, a town hall meeting with legistlators, a rally with Governor Mary Fallin proclaiming this homeschool week in the state of Oklahoma from now on, and more. It was very educational, motivational and inspiring. 2 of the legislators we talked to in the town meetning were homeschooled throughout their education, they were playfully called "The Kiddie Caucus" from the others because they were so young. They spoke to the kids about how they can do anything, and how rewarding it is to work in the Captiol helping to make laws. They were 23, and were elected when they were both 21. It was interesting to hear some of the bills being proposed for homeschool, and it was interesting to hear the debates from parents on both sides. I learned quite a bit. Oklahoma has some of the most relaxed rules and regulations concerning homeschool in the U.S. and obviously parents want to keep it that way.
The kids enjoyed it, even Starla had a great time although I kept the ipad handy. The kids were really good, and managed to stay quiet and pay attention during the hour long historical renactment and the hour long town hall meeting. I was impressed. :) We packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed a little time outside too.
After the Captiol event, we went across the street to the Oklahoma History Museum, they were having a special homeschool day where it was only $2 to get in. They always have such fun exhibits that change.
